Introduction to Virtual Capture – How Does 3D Scanning Work?

Avanti Virtual Capture™ uses the latest state-of-the-art 3D scanning technology to support projects for the AEC industry. Conventional documentation methods are costly and time-consuming, requiring measurements taken by hand, and return trips if any measurements are forgotten. VCap™ will enable you to have every measurement you need, accessible to anyone on your team, from any device.

How does 3D scanning work?

A rotating scanner emits pulses of light to measure the distances of objects and structural elements, collecting millions of data points. Multiple scan positions are stitched together to form a comprehensive point cloud.

What is a point cloud?

A point cloud is a set of data points in 3D space representing x, y, z coordinates. It’s not just a picture. It’s a photorealistic representation of reality, accurate to the millimeter.

How long does it take?

A full project can be scanned in just a few hours! We’ll send an Avanti virtual technician to scan your space and send you a fully-interactive point cloud the next day.

How are point clouds used?

Our virtual design consultants will transform your point clouds into customized deliverables for field verifications, asset documentation, and as-built plans for Revit or AutoCAD.
